Most commissions begin with an enquiry about an existing work, either one that has already sold or one that a collector wishes to see reinterpreted. Others come from collectors who have a specific city or location in mind that does not yet exist in the collection.
In both cases, the starting point is the same: a brief exchange by email.
A new interpretation of an existing work: When a painting in the collection has sold, Carlos can produce a new work based on the same subject. These are never reproductions. Each piece is an independent original, same city, different painting.
A new city or location: Carlos works from photographic material, either his own or provided by the collector. The same technique applies: photographic inversion, monochrome grisaille, and hand-applied oil glazes. The subject changes; the standard does not.
A specific brief Some collectors arrive with a precise vision, a particular vantage point, a format, a scale. This is accommodated where it aligns with the artist practice.
Every commission follows the same working method applied to the rest of the collection. There is no expedited process.
The photograph is studied and inverted. A grisaille is built. Glazes are layered over a period of weeks. The work is signed, documented, and prepared for delivery.
Typical duration is eight to sixteen weeks, depending on format and complexity. Progress is shared at key stages.
There is no obligation at the enquiry stage, and not every conversation results in a commission. To begin, write directly to:
Fell free to include any relevant referencess, an existing work from the collection, a photograph, a location. The more specific, the better.

Carlos Arriaga accepts a limited number of private commissions each year.
